The RADECS 2024 conference took a powerful step forward in promoting diversity and inclusion in space science and engineering through the “Women in Engineering” (WIE) event, co-organized by RADNEXT and sponsored by GlobalFoundries. The event, themed “The Future of Women in Engineering: on ground and beyond, to Moon and Mars”, attracted over 200 attendees, creating a dynamic forum for discussing the challenges women face in these technical fields and providing insights into the essential role diversity plays in advancing innovation and excellence. With engaging panel discussions, inspiring talks, and direct interaction with trailblazing women in the industry, this event was a highlight of the conference and sparked meaningful conversations about how to shape a more equitable future. The event’s focus on women’s roles in space science and radiation effects on electronics couldn’t have come at a more relevant time. “As the space industry embarks on ambitious new missions, including returning humans to the Moon, there is a growing recognition of the need for gender diversity in shaping the future of space exploration”, affirmed Dr. Ygor Aguiar, Associated Scientist at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and organizer of the event. For the first time in history, a woman and a person of color will set foot on the Moon, a significant milestone reflecting societal advancements and the importance of inclusivity in engineering and scientific achievements. Dr. Cristina Plettner, an engineer at the European Space Agency (ESA) and one of our invited panelists, emphasized the importance of this historical moment but also issued a call to action: “We need to do more. We, men and women, researchers, engineers, and scientists, are asked to think over our patterns of thinking and reacting, together to shape a better future for women in engineering.” Her message emphasizes that, while progress has been made, there is still work to be done to create environments where women can thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The role of focus and action in achieving parity

Dr. Deniz Civay, Deputy Director for Aerospace and Defense at GlobalFoundries and another distinguished speaker at the event, touched on the concept of focus driving change. “What you focus on grows,” she said, using the phrase to encourage attendees to align priorities with actionable goals. Dr. Civay expressed excitement about the potential impact of the Women in Engineering panel, particularly in addressing the challenges that prevent women from reaching parity in the field. By bringing attention to the specific hurdles women face and encouraging open dialogue, the panel offered a platform to examine ways to increase female representation and influence in engineering.

Diversity as a path to Innovation

Dr. Yulia Akisheva, an award-winning aerospace engineer and dedicated advocate for gender equality chaired the session and framed the discussion in a broader context, highlighting its importance for everyone, not just women. “Gender equality is an issue that impacts all of us — 100% of the population,” she noted. Akisheva pointed out that science and engineering influence every aspect of our daily lives, from routine activities on Earth to ambitious missions on the Moon and Mars. Achieving diversity in these fields is crucial, not only for fostering inclusion but also for driving meaningful progress. Dr. Akisheva’s message highlighted that diversity isn’t just about fairness but it’s also about unlocking innovation. By bringing together individuals from different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, the scientific and engineering communities can tackle problems more effectively and push the boundaries of what’s possible in space exploration and technology development.

A collaborative path forward

The event wasn’t just a celebration of women’s achievements in engineering; it was a call to action for everyone, including professionals, students, and allies, to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive future. In the words of Dr. Cristina Plettner, “We are asked to think over our patterns of thinking and reacting, together.” This collective responsibility is crucial for driving change, not just within the space and radiation science sectors but across all STEM fields. Events like this provide a platform for those often underrepresented in engineering to share their stories, challenge the status quo, and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

A vision for the future

The Women in Engineering event at RADECS 2024 was not just a moment of reflection on the progress made so far but also an inspiring look at what lies ahead. As space exploration reaches new heights and technological advancements continue to reshape our world, diversity will play a crucial role in ensuring that these innovations benefit all of humanity. The messages shared by the panelists highlight the need for continued focus on gender equality, active efforts to break down barriers, and a collaborative approach to shaping the future. Whether you’re an established professional, a student eager to make a difference, or an ally committed to fostering diversity, your voice and perspective are essential. By joining this ongoing conversation and taking action, we can work together to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to contribute, innovate, and thrive in the fields of space science, engineering, and beyond.
